From Path of the Vampire Wiki
Most actions on the grid will gain you experience (also known as "EXP"). Stealing, tracking, hacking, B&E and using your powers are some activities that will all gain your character experience. As you gain experience you advance in level, improving your character's proficiency in the areas you have chosen.
When you first make your character, you will start with 1500 EXP,(which for a vampire is enough to get from level 1 to level 2 immediately). For each level, you will need more experience (see table below), which makes every level increasingly difficult to reach.

NOTE: Although skirmishing does give experience, the amount given is varied & minor.
Most non-combat powers will give you 20 EXP per anima used. Access the Powers page to find out how much anima each power will cost and multiply by 20 in order to determine the amount of EXP you will gain for using a particular power. For a detailed listing of EXP gained from using specific powers, check the Powers page.
Skirmish powers give a reduced amount of EXP compared to grid-type powers. Powers listed as Battle Powers do not give experience as they are automatically activated during NPC battle - these types of battles give a total amount of EXP, not EXP per power used. To switch your battle powers on and off, adjust your battle tactics.
Killing NPC's (Grinding)
Some areas within the city have NPCs geared towards characters of a certain level. These areas allow characters who are "built" for fighting to gain EXP without wasting energy checking out which NPC's they can beat.

Roleplay points (RPP)

- update needed *
Once you gain enough EXP you can advance to the next level. When this happens you will see a red Level up link on the left side of your screen. Upon clicking the link you will be able to choose which area/s you wish to improve your character in, increasing their stats.
NOTE:You can still gain EXP while the Level up link is active up until you have gained enough to reach 20% towards the next level, at whch time, you will not be able to move, on grid, until you level up.
Each level will earn you 2 points for both your attributes and skills. Simply click the +/- arrow to assign the available points to the desired area. It should be noted that once an attributes reaches 20, each level will require 2 points to advance. Same goes for skills once they reach 10.
