‘My Lord, this Zard has done nothing to me. Why should I take his life? I do not hate this man. I do not even know him. For all I know, this Zard could have a family, even children. I well know that they pride themselves on the compassion they have between their own people.’ Kondo stepped close, his anger building, and whispered, ‘listen, Hunter, this is bigger than this Zard. Bigger than you. The death of this one individual will secure our futures! Now do as I say. I order you.’ Boseraphim blinked, his eyes shifting hesitantly. But then his composure flooded back as he remembered exactly who he was and what he was capable of. Kondo was his master, but he did not scare Boseraphim. This matter before him now - contrary to Kondo’s opinions - was more important than Boseraphim’s loyalty to his Lord. A single life was always more important. ‘I wont do it, my Lord,’ Boseraphim said resolutely. ‘You speak of securing our futures, but all I see is a mountain of doomed futures. We are cornered trogs, and The Empire are the cats. There are other corners of the good world where the fight is still fresh. Furalians and Tenakoshans, both struggle valiantly, while we sit in these mountains, nipping at the heels of conscripted soldiers and puppet generals. The real fight for freedom and justice continues, but it is not here.’ Kondo’s wide, blue eyes locked with his champion’s for the longest time as he stared the larger man down. With a stiff, angry gesture, Kondo nominated one of his other warriors take Boseraphim’s place in the duel. Still facing Boseraphim he hissed, ‘by the time this fight is over, Hunter, I expect you to be gone from my presence. If I see you again, I will have you executed as a coward. Get from my sight!’ (Remnents of ethics, excerpt from chapter 3 of The Science of Magic: Volume 2.) |
